How to Change the Bank Feed View in QuickBooks Online

QuickBooks Online is constantly making changes to the way QuickBooks looks.  One of the areas they make the most changes to is the bank transaction page – the bank feed.

I suspect this is because while the bank feed is a fantastic tool, it is also where most errors come from when it is not fully understood. In constantly changing it they may be trying to get ahead of these errors – in my opinion they are making things more confusing, and therefore more difficult for the small business owner! I would love to hear what you think!

If you’re opening your bank transactions page in QuickBooks Online and this is the view you have:

You can change it!

The thing I really don't like about this isthe way it defaults to putting all of these items in the same column, whetherthey're pluses or minuses. So it's in and out, and once you start getting allof the information through here, to me, it looks like a big confusing mess.

There is a gear icon that relates to the bankfeed only:

From here you scroll done a little, you cansee “show amounts in one column”. Now uncheck it!

Voilà:

You have a column that shows the amounts thathave been spent, you have a column that shows the amounts that have come in andhopefully that will make it a little easier

If you would like to watch a video on how to do this, see below:

Hi, Kerry here from My Cloud Bookkeeping. Today, I'm going to be looking at the bank feed once again, because this continues to be the area where most people have difficulties and QuickBooks keeps changing what the bank feed looks like. I think they're trying to kind of get ahead of where the problems are, but in my view, they're just making things a little bit more confusing. So if you open up your bank feed and it looks like this with a list of transactions in and out all in the same column, it's actually really easy to change, and I'm going to show you how.

So here we are on the bank feed. I arrived here from “Transactions” on the left hand side. Some versions say “Banking”, but it it'll take you to the same place. We're looking here at the checking account and you can see the transactions that have come through. Now, this is the version of the bank feed that has this review and confirm, which if you've watched my other videos, you know, I am not a fan of, but it's something that more and more clients seem to be seeing. So if that's what you are looking at, let's try and make it a little easier for you. The thing I really don't like about this is the way it defaults to putting all of these items in the same column, whether they're pluses or minuses. So it's in and out, and once you start getting all of the information through here, to me, it looks like a big confusing mess.

So if you pop across here to the gear icon, so this is the lower one for the bank feed, not the top one up the right that we often look at, and we scroll down a little, you can see “show amounts in one column”. Now watch what happens when I unclick this. Voilà, you have a column that shows the amounts that have been spent, you have a column that shows the amounts that have come in and hopefully that will make it a little easier for you to correctly categorize your transactions that come in from the bank feed.

I find this so much easier to work with, I hope you do too! And if this video is useful, please do click like, subscribe to my channel, ring the bell, I've got a whole pile of little quick tips for the bank feed coming out in the next week or next few weeks, and I'd love to hear from you.

Cheers.
