It’s one of those deceptively easy reads that sneaks into your brain and stays there.
I read it fast… then found myself offering negotiation advice to a friend dealing with her teenager. 🤯

The QuickBooks Online Desktop app is here!
From the gear icon, select "Get the desktop app." This will allow you to open QuickBooks Online from a shortcut on your desktop without having to use your browser.
The advantages are easily opening additional tabs and using split screen and not getting logged out (all the time!!). I have been using it, and I am not convinced. I still get logged out occasionally, and it seems a little slow. Given that QuickBooks Online has been slow lately, it may be no worse than using a browser.

I was recently approached by a friend whose colleague had left his corporate role and was considering bookkeeping. She asked if I’d be open to speaking with him, and I agreed. We connected on LinkedIn, and I sent him a link to my calendar.
When the meeting request came through, I didn’t realize it was the same person. The title of the meeting? “Leverage the community for leads.”
That phrase immediately triggered me. And when that happens I pause and reflect—what exactly caused this reaction?
This moment sent me down a bit of a rabbit hole. 🌀
As many of you know, I deeply value the support and collaboration in the QuickBooks Online community. We refer clients when it’s a better fit for someone else, we share knowledge, and we lift each other up. It’s a network built on relationships, not transactions.
It reflected on the nature of networking—how different it feels within this community. We build real connections. We know each other’s strengths. We trust one another enough to refer clients.
It’s not about “leveraging leads”—it’s about serving well and supporting one another while doing it.
When I responded to the meeting request (still not realizing this was the referral), the person replied that the call could be “mutually beneficial,” and that he might reach out to me for my services—without knowing what those services were, or who I serve best.
Honestly? It felt like he was offering me breadcrumbs. 🥖 Not literally, of course—but that’s how it landed.
And it made me wonder: have we quietly staged a revolution?
While we’ve been busy building our businesses and relationships, maybe we’ve created something new. Something rooted in trust, support, and real collaboration.
Sure, there are still deals made on golf courses and rooms we’re not invited into. But we’ve built something better. A space where we rise together—not by “leveraging” one another, but by knowing, helping, and respecting each other.

I’m not a big fan of New Year’s resolutions. Instead, I prefer setting intentions and reviewing them regularly, favouring consistent action over dramatic, life-changing resolutions.
This past Winter Solstice, I did a year-in-review exercise where I reflected on each month of 2024. I thought about what went well, what challenges I faced, what I learned, and what I was grateful for. Looking back on the year, I could clearly see where I had been successful—and where I hadn’t quite hit my goals. But there was one key factor that made the difference: consistency.
Coincidentally, around the same time, the app I use for my workouts sent me a summary of my year, showing my progress at the gym. It was a powerful reminder that those small, consistent efforts really do add up!
However, there’s one area of my life where I’ve been struggling: branching out the services I offer in my business. Despite wanting to make progress, I’ve been a bit sporadic in my efforts. This year, I’m determined to change that. I plan to break that big goal into smaller, manageable steps so I can build more consistency, just like I’ve done with my workouts.
Consistency isn’t about perfection. It’s about showing up—little by little, day by day.

Credits in QuickBooks Online can be a bit of a mess. If you have a relatively simple situation where you're providing a refund or a discount after the invoice has been issued, then a credit memo is the way to go. Once you've created and sent an invoice, it's not good practice to change it, particularly if it relates to a prior month.
There could be sales tax on it, it may have been included in an income tax filing, and you'll end up creating an even bigger mess.
Make sure to read my latest blog on "Using Credit Memos in Quickbooks Online" so you will be guided on how to create a credit memo. You can use it to pay down the invoice, and you won’t have to make any changes to what you have already sent to your customer or mess up your sales tax or other reports!

Advanced Reporting allows you to create your own reports from a template or from scratch. You can choose, sort, group, filter, and create pivot tables with your data.
Once you have created your report, you can filter and change your options to get the information you need.

I’m seeing more and more posts from people who have worked in traditional jobs, only to lose them and struggle to find new opportunities.
When I returned from Cayman in 2016 and looked at the job market, I realized it didn’t fit who I was or how I wanted my life to look.
I took time to reflect on my values and priorities, along with my strengths, and began building something that worked for me—both personally and professionally. That’s how My Cloud Bookkeeping was born, now going strong for eight years.
The learning curve was steep. Tech tools that were new and groundbreaking at the time, marketing (including launching a YouTube channel)—all well outside my comfort zone. I’ve constantly refined my services and picked up new skills along the way.
Being adaptable and open to change has been one of my greatest strengths. 💪 Maybe it comes from parenting? Each time I had a child, I lost my job and had to take whatever work I could find, prioritizing time with my daughters while they were young.
The other day, I got an email from the Forum for Women Entrepreneurs @theforumca that made me reflect further: businesses majority-owned by women show the highest innovation rate—38%—significantly outperforming businesses with no women ownership. Women truly are doing it for themselves.
Mentorship from FWE played a huge role when I started this business, and I still benefit from those relationships today.
Innovation and curiosity go hand in hand. The world is changing—and those of us who embrace that change are building something powerful.

I recently saw a post suggesting we shouldn’t plan for 2025 to be our best year ever—because 2024 likely wasn’t. Instead, we should focus on what went wrong and use that to improve.
I get the sentiment… but 2024 was one of my best years yet! 🎉 Did it have challenges? Absolutely. But it also brought unexpected highs and opportunities I never saw coming.

I’ve been there—looking at a never-ending checklist, wondering how it will all get done before December 25th. When my daughters were young, I realized I was imposing impossible deadlines on myself. Then, I asked: What actually has to be done before Christmas?
Must-dos:
Buy the turkey ✅
Wrap the gifts ✅
Nice, but not essential:
Complete the bathroom renovation ❌
Deep clean every corner of the house ❌
Once I broke tasks into categories—before Christmas, over the holidays, and next year—I felt an incredible sense of relief. Seriously, who was going to check that I had swept behind the sofa!
I even started writing holiday cards after Christmas, renaming them New Year cards. It became a joyful, relaxed tradition. While the girls played with their new toys, I sat nearby writing cards, thinking fondly of friends instead of feeling resentful about what used to feel like an obligation.

We all know credit card fees can be a headache, but how do YOU handle them in QuickBooks?
There are many options for processing customer payments, and you can save a significant amount of money by choosing the best option for your business.

I was working with one of my regular clients recently and they had booked in because they had seen this scary error message when they went to reconcile their credit card.
This message is not as bad as it looks!
What it is telling you is that something has changed since you completed your last reconciliation.
Perhaps you have corrected an entry, and in doing so “unreconciled” it, or entered something incorrectly, deleted it and entered it correctly. While neither of these scenarios are great – they do happen!
I made a video a while back to help you resolve this difference so you can move forward and reconcile with confidence.

It can help to know what an accountant or a bookkeeper typically does so you can make sure you're reaching out for the right help.

You can now recategorize selected (or all!) categories by supplier.
This would be a great way to reclassify software subscriptions if you decided to separate administrative and marketing subscriptions for example. Or simply do a bulk clean up if you found a supplier's bills were not in the right place - supplies instead of Cost of Goods sold? So many great applications for this improvement!

Let me be clear: I think bookkeepers are brilliant.
They are essential.
This is not about hierarchy—it’s about assumption.
What frustrates me is the casual misogyny that persists.
The way it erases decades of education, experience, and hard work.
The way it undervalues me—without even taking the time to ask what I do.
I don’t think young me would have believed this would still be the reality in 2025.
But here we are.
Being underestimated by people with fewer qualifications, less experience—and, frankly, less curiosity.
It’s not just frustrating.
It’s heartbreaking.
We’ve come far. But clearly, we’re not done yet.

A small adjustment can simplify things. Now, e-transfers should either suggest a match or open for categorization.
If you're in Canada and send a lot of e-transfers, get in touch with me. I’ve had great success with SparcPay (link in my bio). They can automate and streamline your payments and sync smoothly with QuickBooks Online. I highly recommend them!
